Clark Smyth
Al, I think Gillespie and Gilbert were somewhat in touch with him. I think he had some drug and alcohol problems.
I had this idea that, at reunion, we could commandeer the band's instruments and do a rendition of "Dancin' in the Moonlight" with DR on bass and singing leads, McKelvey on lead guitar, Kelley on keyboards, me on rhythm guitar, and Paul Berns on drums. Maybe, we can still do it, if we had a bass player (maybe the guy from the band?)
Did you know that DR started his performance career in 1963? It was at the tryouts for the Kiwanis Talent Show. The day before, DR, Kelley and I decided to enter. We were a trio of three guitars called the "Travelers Three"--clever, huh? We whipped together two songs, but didn't have time to learn the words so we taped them to the sides of our guitars. Needless to say, we didn't make it, nor could we have competed with Ellen Canepa's flawless performance of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata".
I agree with Gilbs (?), that wherever DR is he's dancin' in the moonlight.
