Hi everyone.  Just want you all to know that Debbie and I are moving back to the Cleveland area.   We have sold our home in Arizona and have purchased a log home in Huron, OH.  We will be moving in to our new home the first week of December - just in time for the Holidays and a wonderful Ohio winter.  It has been 12 years since Debbie and I have had to shovel snow or do some white knuckle driving.  Can't wait!

Ok John, here is one you should know.

Next to Beach school and across from St. Chris was a little store. Name the woman who ran it and the name of the store.

John,

It was the Flying Turns - coasters at Euclid Beach.   Who made/what was the name of the salt water taffy at Euclid Beach?

As we approach this holiday season of Thanksgiving, we are especially grateful for our classmates who have battled and won some major challenges like Holly (Portz), John Dawson and at least one more that I'm aware of (if there are more, please let us know).

As you are giving thanks, please also keep in your thoughts, prayers and meditations Phyllis and Tim O'Connell and Nancy Westerfield!!!

Larry Gilbert's the winner!  The salt water taffy was Humphrey taffy.  Way to go Larry!

My mother's maiden name is Humphrey so when my mom and dad were dating and going to Euclid Beach they would show her ID and get admitted to the park free.  They both loved to tell the story.  And, yes, the got free taffy too!

Nancy, I am thrilled to hear there is no cancer!  That is AWESOME!

Guy, welcome back to Ohio!  Come to River for lunch, or, we'll have to go to Huron!  (Host pays, you see...)

I wanted to warn classmates about something that you Social Security Recipients may not be aware of.

Social Security is 85% taxable.

They withhold nothing.

Ergo, you pay through the nose at year end.  Be advised.  You could even be penalized if you paid in less withholding than last year.  It is not too late to withhold more and avoid a penalty.  See your tax man.  Maybe Larry if you're local!

Larry Gilbert

To clarify Al's post:  The tax on Social Security benefits varies depending on other sources of gross income - but it's a low threshhold (testing begins at $32,000 of gross income excluding Social Security benefits for a married couple.)  You can elect to have tax withheld from your benefit to assist in budgeting your tax liability if you complete Form W-4V.  See the following from http://www.ssa.gov/planners/taxwithold.htm

"You can ask us to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security when you apply for benefits.

If you are already receiving benefits or if you want to change or stop your withholding, you'll need a form W-4V from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

You can download the form Get Acrobat Reader, or call the IRS toll-free number 1-800-829-3676 and ask for Form W-4V, Voluntary Withholding Request. (If you are deaf or hard of hearing, call the IRS TTY number, 1-800-829-4059.)

When you complete the form, you will need to select the percentage of your monthly benefit amount you want withheld. You can have 7%, 10%, 15% or 25% of your monthly benefit withheld for taxes.

Note: Only these percentages can be withheld. Flat dollar amounts are not accepted. If you want to know how much a particular percentage is equal to in dollars, call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).

Sign the form and return it to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. "

Oh my gosh, we went to Euclid Beach every summer because Susan Hubbard's grandfather was a Shriner.  The rides were free for us!  Susan's mom/dad were best friends of my parents, so we spent every Holiday & summers doing everything together w/them.  I just remember the time all of us were at our house & Susan,Barb & I got some matches (don't know whose idea it was) & newspaper & lit a little fire on the floor up in our attic & to watch it burn.  Oh my goodness, we were going to the movies weeks later & mother went up to get our raincoats in the attic.  She spotted it; never yelled; came down & cried, which was even worse!  Obviously, we never got to the movies.  See Bruce, you woudn't have wanted to be friends w/the Peate girls because they did very bad things!  We could have burned my parents house down!!!!

Euclid Beach: I was just telling Zahnow at our last reunion how Barb was "going: w/him & I was "going with" Guy.  After that day, both of them "broke up" with us & went on to someone else. We were heartbroken.  I was telling mom this before she passed away & she said, "no wonder! You weren't very nice to Guy that day."  So, was Barb mean to John to? Or did they just put their heads together & decide to do a mutual dumping of the Peate twins???  Anyway, I laughed my head off Mother rememberd that all those yrs. later!  But I was happy when I met my Mr. Right, Fred, in high school. There was no one else!  I do remember watching Spin/Marty & Mickey Mouse when Guy/John walked us home after school. Then walked to their homes down by the lake. Can you imagine that we actually WALKED? Kids today don't get that, which is why we have so many overweight young children. Was it Spin or Marty who was sooooo cute????

I LOVED that Taffy by the way.  Today it would pull my caps off!  Would love to get together Nance if it's not during the week & on a Sat.  It could be lunch, right??? So happy the results were not cancer. Just had an ablasion on the back of my neck to help w/arthritis where I have degenerative disk disease. Can't stand getting old!  If anyone wants to correspond w/me via email, for now it has to go back to my office as the computer modem is messed up here at the house. Fred just forwards my emails.  it's lpowrie@feridean.com.

Linda,

I remember the Hubbards very well. Marge and Lou Hubbard were also best friends with my folks. If I remember correctly,Susan went with Doug McFarland. The Hubbards lived just down the street from us I think on Laramie Dr. I always thought Susan was a hottie....I think my folks were childhood friends with the Hubbards.....how funny is this?
