Hey Fred,

Love the Paramilitary Organization you were with!  I was an enlisted man in the same one once, meeting in the basement of the old Methodist Church!  We were a tough bunch!  Ask any mom!  LOL (Low on Levity)

By the way, a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Jan Ravenstine and Kay Woodten Crawford!

Al,

I was in that paramilitary boy scout troop too and never achieved a very high rank.  My highest rank ever was a ship captain on a two person sailing dingy at the CYC and "guppy of the Year."  Oh and I was a lieutenant in the Kensington Elementary School safety patrol.  I guess I peaked early in life about age 12.  I am on a serious comeback now and I am shooting for "grandpa of the year."

Ladies and gentlemen, if you haven't seen the update on Bruce McKelvey's profile, please take a moment to read it and send your good thoughts out to Marsha and Bruce.  We haven't heard from Bruce on the Forum for a little while, and now we know why.  Thanks, all.

I had a sudden realization of a great truth, an epiphany the other day when I realized that almost everything I needed to know I had already learned by the time I graduated from Kensington Elementary School.  After all, I could read, write and do arithmetic.  I learned how to balance a check book from "bank day".   When I had Miss Sivon for a teacher I instinctively knew that a woman like that was all I would ever need.   Sure, I learned algebra and geometry later, but how often does anyone use crap like that?  Burford helped me to become a better writer but that is mostly a matter of practice.  What good is the Latin I learned.  Nobody speaks that dead language anymore.

All those years of college and  a degree in economics were a waste of time too.   Economics is about as much of a science as astrology.  Look at those stupid Phd economists in Wasington spending and printing money to get us out of recession and debt.  Even a sixth grader knows that's crazy!!!

Look out Loonybird

My goodness, you guys:  all this Mickey Mouse talk.  It is a known fact (& since we own an assisted liv. facility we definitely know) that short term memory is the first thing to go. I can see it in the case of many of our formerly outstanding classmates who have only their long-term memories of Annette Funnicello to keep them going!!

Well, I had the injection into the nerve that wraps around the vocal cord on Mon. Nov. 8 to try to unparalyze the nerve, & hopefully stimulate it to begin working so I can talk better or at least somewhat normally instead of like a 10 yr. old!  It has been very difficult & makes you well aware of how being different is for anyone because many people made fun of me when I talked. And there wasn't a thing I could do about it.  But as of today, my voice is back (probably not the way it used to be, but I can be heard now!) and I am so happy.  I had to go 24 hrs. not talking, & my husband was hilarious.  He talked, I couldn't, then he'd answer himself. Think it was a long evening by the time we went to bed! I know people were praying for me, so I thank you for that & my heart feels so happy today because it was at times frightening not to have a voice. I was choking one night & Fred was not in the room & I couldn't get his attention. And I thought I was going to choke to death. I have a great understanding what it is like for those who can't speak. And this choking thing is something that happens w/a paralyzed nerve like I had after the surgery. Seems a little better. They give you ways to minimize it when you swallow. If there is anything out of the ordinary to get, seems like I get it. But I am grateful and so blessed right now. My husband is happy also because he kept having me repeat everything as he couldn't hear me. On the other hand, he liked that I couldn't raise my voice I think!!!

Bruce, you will get thru this w/Marsha. We are praying for full recovery & know that God hears those prayers.

Linda,

I'm glad that you are feeling better and can talk again.  But talk is way over rated, just kept LOOKING GOOD!

just an update, phyllis got a good bill of health, she can go back to work on dec.8. now we can all pray for holly and bruce's wife-there's alot of rrhs63 graduates out there, so we should help them both. know that my prayers are  both of you., look how we all helped linda and phy. don't forget if anyone can come to herb's on dec.8, ay 6 were having a get together, let me know so i can call them to let them know if were having a big group. i'm still home with my bad knee, now i'm into thearpy,it's been amonth off work already, but my problems are minor compared to the others. take care. nancy

11/15/10 04:22 PM #727

Fred Thomas

Nancy,

Good luck to Phyllis.  I hope her "good bill of health"  doesn't lead to a "good medical bill".

"Let's raise taxes on the rich."

Although I understand the sentiment, there are at least two things wrong with that statement.

1.  The Federal Government may allow the "marginal tax rates" to go up, not "taxes".  They are not the same thing.  When so-called "rich" people have their "marginal tax rates" go up they may sell their business, work less, find tax shelters or leave the country.  Ironically, the Federal Government may raise LESS revenue from taxes by increasing "tax rates".

2.  People with incomes over $250,000 a year are not necessarily "rich".  An example could be a doctor who has just got out of medical school who has huge student loans and a very large NEGATIVE net worth.  Real rich people may have no apparent income at all, just huge assets or a sheltered income from a trust.  Raising "tax rates" may not affect real rich people at all.

Therefore, "Let's raise taxes on the rich" is almost as stupid as, "The exception proves the rule".

Where's Dawson to start an argument?

Linda Peate (Powrie)

Fred, you crack me up.  I remember when my husband & I graduated from Kent State & we thought we would be rich if we made $1000/mo.  We could buy a $50,000 house in Rocky River & do all the stuff that comes along w/that income.  However, as the yrs. went by (he got out in 1970 during the Kent riots & just to get out he graduated in 2-1/1 yrs. because we were sorely misplaced not copulating on the front campus), the more you made, the more the govt. took, & his bonuses were just ridiculously reduced by what they took.  So though you think you're making more, it just isn't so in this day & age. Some of our colleagues at Sandoz spent money like crazy & we just simply didn't.  We were conservative & savers, but how can one plan for retirement when people are living till 99 like my mother?  She had PLENTY of money, but not to live that long.  And taxes just go on and on.   At Feridean (our asst. living facility), we are the HIGHEST taxed in Genoa Twnship. And we certainly aren't the biggest by any means.   The more you get ahead, the further you fall behind!  It was only this past yr. that Fred decided he would begin to enjoy some of life.  Praise God because it drives me crazy when it's work, work, work.  We are 65 for Pete's Sake.  We have been in many situations, given to, taken from, now childless--money truly isn't all it's cracked up to be, is it?  Really I mean is it??

Oh well, Fred & Dawson make life hilarious for me.  I love reading the funny stuff because too many people are too serious!  I've had enough of that in my life.  Now I'm going to laugh for the next 30 yrs.!!!!  Linda

hey linda, i agree, we need more laughter, that's why i usually like this webite between the 2 "boys" going back and forth. life's so serious,so many bad things happening, so it's kinda nice to loose yourself on this page.i love to read what they say-they really sound like 2 teenagers fighting over a bone, you go boys-keep us laughing.

john, hope your doing okay now-let us know how your feeling-we care about you. nancy

What world do you live in?

The rich people in this country don't pay taxes. As Leona put it just the little people pay taxes. Gates has 80 people working for him to spend money with charities so he doesn't have to pay taxes.

Large companies like Ford and GMC have lawyers telling them where and when to spend money so they don't have to pay taxes.

The people we elect are making the tax laws for them not us. (Well me anyway) I haven't moved to a gated community yet.

I think they should tax people who own boats over 30'. That would give them two holes in the water too pour money down.

John told me to take up the slack while he was getting thinner.

Linda

Retirement is still good after 6 years. I don't know how I had time to go to work all those years. It seems the more money you have the bigger problems you have. Look at Fred!

Animal Planet

I have learned a lot about our human condition from watching our fellow mammals on Animal Planet.  I saw a program where a male bear was chasing a female bear.  She seemed to be trying to get away but every so often she would look back to see if he was still following her.  He was patient, yet relentless with his tongue hanging out.  When they finally got out of camera range you could hear them growling and moaning.  It sounded like they were having a good time.

Too bad that program was not on when I was growing up because I now realize that just because those girls would slap my face and run away I should have not given up so easily and I should have pursued those females with the same determination as my fellow hairy mammals.

Fred

I heard that you did chase them, they were just faster.

Are you walking around your gated community looking for bears or just hairy friends?

I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same thing as making a 'life..'

Just because I'm loaded, well half loaded and I live in a gated master planned upscale community doesn't mean that I don't enjoy hanging out with you guys on the message board.  I am actually very open minded that way.  Also we are in need of landscaping workers for our neighborhood association because not as many illegal aliens are crossing the border so if any of you guys like Randy, John or Al need a job come on down.  I can even get you a pass to swim at the club and visit the big house.

The loaded part means your drinking to much again?

No way am I going back to Texas. They put too much stupid in the water down there for me. I don't like Texas cement ponds. I think that's where they put the stupid in the water.

Upscale Gated Community means what?

        1. You don't have stage brush.

       2. You have Illegals.

       3. You have to BYOB.

       4. You still have to lock your car at nite.

I'm glad you have a few moments for the lower class. Feel free to go hunting with your friend and close advisor Chenney.

Rather then updating my profile...I thought this might be a better and quicker way to update all of you regarding my wifes condition. First of all, I want to wish Holly Portz and Phyllis Smith my very best in a great recovery from their medical issues. I pray for you both...often.

As you know...my wifes breast cancer has returned after twenty three years...but this time has manifisted itself in her right lung....still breast cancer. She had an MRI and a PETSCAN the other day to rule out any cancer issues anywhere else in her body. Our visit with the Oncologist this past Wed. was very positive. At this point, there is no cancer anywhere else . This cancer is treatable, however, not cureable. This type of cancer feeds of off estrogen. She is now on an estrogen blocker, Femara, which should shrink the tumors in the lung and hopefully put this crap into remission. Thruout this whole thing, she has felt great, still goes to the Gym every day and works out, pulls a full day at the hospital as an RN. But she has agreed....it is time to slow down at work, and re-prioritize some things in her life. She is sixty-three, but can out-work most twenty year olds. The follow-up from here will be a chest xray in six weeks, and a review with the Oncologist.

My wife and I want to give all of you a big hug for your kind words and prayers. You can say what you want about prayer...We are here to tell you all IT WORKS !!! I love each and every one of my RRHS classmates....thankyou for suporting us.... Have a couple of beers for me on December 8th...wish I could be there to "Supervise"...especially Dawson and Greenleaf....cuz sometimes they get outa control.....
