Ellen, you can rub it in about the nice weather in Oregon, but it's hot and humid down here in Texas. Thank God for Joe Freon, the inventor of air conditioning. He's the cousin of the inventor of the toilet, Johnny Crapper.

I was wishin' everyone was here, Fred, to take in the fun weekend upcoming. Probably be a bunch of muscle cars (think '57 Chevy) and bikers and such around. Although, it does sound like you could use a reprieve from all that SW heat. Which is why I'm here and not still in Tucson. BTW your toe was probably trapped by an errant sheet during that dream. Kinda like being stuck in the mud.

Nahhhhh. I just think Fred's shorts are too tight.....

Here is another dream for you guys:
I am in some place somewhat familiar and I am completely naked but everyone else is dressed. Sometimes it looks like our main high school hallway. People seem not to notice me but it is still embarassing despite my perfect body, so I have to try to hide with little success.

Ellen Aspinwall (Templar)

I looked it up: Often times, when you realize that you are naked in your dream, no one else seems to notice. Everyone else in the dream is going about their business without giving a second look at your nakedness. If this happens in your dream, then it implies that your fears are unfounded; no one will notice except you. You may be magnifying the situation and making an issue of nothing.

Now, can we please talk cars. If you tell me about your dream car, I'll tell you about mine.

Nice car, Larry. Any memories out there of my mom's '61 Chevy Nova? White with black convertible top. Red interior. Stick shift. Nice little car but that's not the 'dream' car......Jerome, AZ, 1992 or '93.....driving on the precipice up to the Gold (by mistake---they were digging for copper) King Mine and Ghost Town (cute donkeys). There is a 10,000 cubic inch gasoline engine they call 'Big Bertha' which operates one of two producing saw mills a'top the hillside there. Take ear protection if you ever go. It's fascinating to watch but ear spliting. But, I digress.... Across from this precarious drive to the mine is a lot of old mine dirt piled high. Sitting there all by itself, sparkling in the sunshine was one of THE most beautiful 1957 Chevys I've ever seen. Metallic Midnight Blue pictured against a pile of tan dirt. Not a speck of dust on it. The sunshine bouncing off of all those shineys in the paint. Dazzling. We just stopped and stared. If I ever win the lottery...... http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/3/2392/4181/30979590002_large.jpg

Yes Ellen, the 1957 Chevy was a classic even in 1957. Our neighbor had a beautiful cherry red convertible. My dream car though was my red 1987 Chevy Sprint with a Suzuki 3 cylinder, 1 liter engine which represented the minimalist car that I should have had in college.

Nice little car. Especially the red one I found. I looked it up but couldn't find information on gas mileage. It had to be good?

During my junior and maybe senior year I drove my mom's little Volvo PV544. It was black, stick shift, and faster than hell. Looked a little like an old hot rod. That was fun, too.

Way kewl, Larry. You have the neatest videos. My mom's first car was some kind of really old Dodge. Black square box with running boards. There goes Peggy Aspinwall off to work at Westgate looking like some old Godfather movie rolling down Riverview. Sadly she traded it in before I was old enough to drive it.

If I am reincarnated, instead of being so athletic, intelligent and good-looking I want to come back as a motor-head so I can work on my own car and pick up girls.

A really good, independent mechanic can also make some big bucks these days. But the real $ is in restoration....

Fred Thomas

Ellen, given all those careers it's amazing how many young people waste their time and money in college.

10/28/09 07:55 PM #61

Ellen Aspinwall (Templar)

Actually the mechanics usually have to go to mechanic school these days. Everything is computerized. It's not like it used to be - working in the garage or HS shop with someone who could teach you how to do the grease kinds of things. And there are also schools for auto body work and anything else you could think of to do with restoration. Everything is high tech any more and very competitive.

Trade schools or military tech schools can actually lead to employment opportunities. However, what do you do with a degree in sociology, history or economics? If my kids hadn't studied engineering, medicine, and dental lab technology I would have called a military recruiter.

10/29/09 11:56 AM #63

Ellen Aspinwall (Templar)

History? David Taylor. Economics? I had a really boring econ prof in college. Sociology? My niece graduated from the U of O in something like that and is employed full time with the State of Oregon Social Services. State employment with all the benes. My son graduated from UW in poly sci (Phi Beta Kappa)and eventually obtained a 2nd degree in journalism. His knowledge of the constitution and it's history and his sharp observations on everything political are just fascinating. Plus, he's started to teach part-time. It's how he makes a living. We need all kinds of education for all walks of life....we especially need great teachers.

Fred Thomas

My BA in economics has been completely useless, but if I got a masters and Phd in economics I could possibly get a job teaching some other young fools or get a job in the Obama Administration and help to destroy the US economy.

On a postive note my three grandsons learned to use phonics and how to read in kindergarten and even though they don't use flashcards at school, I still have a pack of cards from my days at Kensington Elementary School that I use to drill them when they come over. Some things need to be learned by rote.

The Grandkids better study up on 'Ebonics" considering the sorry state in the whitehouse. Ellen is right about the $ being in restoration in the automotive field. I am still active in that venue..and 100k will start the conversation.....and we go from there....
