Barbara Peate (Sabo)

Ellen,

I remember hearing that Paul Anka wrote the song for his babysitter, but I'm not sure if it's true or not.  Most people thought he wrote it for Annette Funicello though.  Not sure which is true!

Paul Anka and Annette Funicello were 17 in 1960 and dating. He wrote and recorded "Puppy Love" for her describing her as "the love of my life!"

I believe he wrote Diana for his babysitter who wasn't the least bit interested in him!!  Does anyone know who sang Summertime?  It's summertime, summertime, sum sum summertime....etc?

Barbie:  Paul at 15 had a crush on Diana who was 20. She occasionally babysat his younger brother and sister.  He would run into her at church and other places.  She just wasn't interested in him.  So he wrote "Diana" about her.

Now, as Barbie said, who wrote Summertime?

Roberta Young (Berwanger)

George Gershwin

Bobbie:  That's Gershwin's "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess.  The one Barbie is asking about is actually "Summertime, Summertime" which is not the same song.  Any other takers on this?

Alan Greenleaf

"Summertime Summertime" is by the Jamies.  1958.

YOU DID NOT SAY THAT GERSHWIN WAS FIRST DO I WIN? BOBBI

10/18/17 08:24 PM #3060

Ellen Aspinwall (Templar)

Yes, Al, that is correct.

Bobbie:  I'm afraid not because Barbie wrote out the words for "Summertime, Summertime." But you do have Honorable Mention for coming up with Gershwin's "Summertime!"

Now...there's one more.  Who sang "In The Summertime?"

I WAS JUST KIDDING I DID NOT EXPECT TO WIN. THANKS FOR HONORABLE MENTION.

That would be me, Linda, who asked about Summertime.  Good going, Al!!  That is so old but I AWAYS loved it.  My sisters laugh at me because I have all the 50s and 60s downloaded on my phone and play them when I am showering and getting dressed.  I LOVE them.

Sorry, Lin.  Obviously, I can still get you girls confused even when your name is plain as day.  Now, who can tell us about "In The Summertime???"

"In The Summertime" was first released in 1970 and was number one around the world. It was one of the best-selling singles of all time selling over 30 million copies.  Looking for the recording artist?

Bruce took some video of fall colors in the Metro Park while he was visiting there.  Thought you all would enjoy seeing one:

Anyone come up with the recording artist for "In The Summertime?"

11/06/17 12:30 PM #3068

Clark Smyth

All I can remember about "In the Summertime" was that the artist had a funny name and it was a one-hit wonder like "Dancin' in the Moonlight".

BTW, we're thinking about taking our camper to Cleveburg in Sept. for the reunion.

Awesome, Clark, that you all may make the 55th! We'll put you on the list as a possible (God willing and the creek don't rise!).

Good memory, Clark, on "In The Summertime." It was Mungo Jerry. Actually, that's the name of the band. His bio says he had a string of hits around the globe. https://www.mungojerry.com/     His name is Ray Dorset and he toured with a Mungo Jerry movie in 2016 to sell-out crowds. He has also composed hit songs for others.  Who knew????
