The 4th of July!!

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men
who signed the Declaration of Independence? Their story. . .

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,
and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;
another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or
hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes,
and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants.

Nine were farmers and large plantation owners;
men of means, well educated.

But they signed the Declaration of Independence
knowing full well that the penalty would be death if
they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and
trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the
British Navy. He sold his home and properties to
pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British
that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.
He served in the Congress without pay, and his family
was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him,
and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer,
Walton , Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that
the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson
home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General
George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed,
and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.
The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying.
Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill
were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests
and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his
children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and
silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

Remember: freedom is never free!

My greatest fear in high school was that the girls would start reading my mind.  Luckily they never did, but if they had the conversations would probably have sounded like this:

"What are you looking at?"  (SLAP)  (sound of her hand slapping my face)

"I will not!" (SLAP SLAP)

"Are you crazy?" (SLAP SLAP SLAP)

"Pervert!" (SLAP SLAP SLAP SLAP)

In high school I spent about 90% of my time thinking about girls and 10% thinking about sports.  Academics were not on the radar and I never did any home work at home.  Afterall school was boring.  Who was really interested in cutting up a smelly dead frog in biology class?  Studying hands on human biology was much more interesting.  And studying pendulums and magnets was boring in physics class.  Studying girls walking in such a curvey swervy ways was much better.  "A wiggle when she walks and a giggle when she talks is what makes the world go around."  And what fun is it to watch a beaker overflow into a bunsin burner and light on fire in chemistry class?  When she whispers in my ear it is amazing to feel the electro-chemical reactions in my own body.

Okay, so this is Barb, not Lin.  For some reason I cannot get to my profile and page as I have been at her house since June.  Just letting all know to keep prayer going for Lin.  She had her surgery yesterday through her stomach and through her back.  Very complicated and hard to explain what all they did.  She is doing amazingly well considering what was done.  Is hooked up to so much equipment since she turned "70" and it is quite annoying.  Today walking down the hall and doing some steps with physical therapist.  Must not bend at all for 3 months so all can heal.  She also surprised everyone as today she is eating normal food and not liquids as yesterday.  She is very strong and detetmined.  Also, thanks for birthday wishes.  Will be here until August so looks as though I probably will not be at 70th B-day party.  Up in the air for Lin.

We Must Stop This Immediately !  
Have you noticed that stairs are getting  steeper.  Groceries are  heavier .  And, everything is  farther  away. Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to discover how  long    our street had become! 
And, you know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones. They speak in  whispers  all the time! If you ask them to speak up they just keep repeating themselves, endlessly mouthing the same silent message  until they're red in the face! What do they think I am a lip reader?
I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age. On the other hand, people my own age are so much  older   than I am. I ran into an old friend the other day and she has aged so much that she  didn't even recognize  me. 
I got to thinking about the poor dear while I was combing my hair this morning, and in doing so, I glanced at my own reflection  .  Well, REALLY NOW   -   even mirrors  are not made the way they used to be!  
Another thing, everyone drives so  fast  these days! You're risking life and limb if you happen to pull onto the motorway in front of them. All I can say is, their brakes must wear out awfully fast, the way I see them  screech and swerve  in my rear view mirror.
Clothing manufacturers are   less civilized   these days. Why else would they suddenly start labelling a size 10 or 12 dress as 18 or 20? Do they think no one notices? The people who make  bathroom scales  are pulling the same prank. Do they think I actually 'believe' the number I see on that dial? HA! I would never let myself weigh that much! Just who do these people think they're fooling? 
I'd like to call up someone in authority to report what's going on -- but the telephone company   is in on the conspiracy too: they've printed the phone books in such  small  type that no one could ever find a number in there!

All I can do is pass along this warning:

WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!  
Unless something drastic happens, pretty soon everyone will have to suffer these awful indignities.  

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO WE CAN GET THIS CONSPIRACY STOPPED!

Hope everyone is having a great summer. Mine has been riddled with four surgeries and the recuperation that go's along with it. But it's hard to keep a good man down. I am really looking foward to the class b-day party. Bought my tickets months ago. (gotta be optimistic) Tomorrow morning I am catching a flight to Victoria, BC to join up with the B-17G Bomber "Sentimental Journey" to be on tour with her as flight crew through August 25th. I am really looking forward to this. Hope the Peate twins are gonna be there...I am trying to get Darcy Driscol to come as well. As I have preached before, we ain't gettin any younger...so we need to hang out together as often as we can. Hope Mike Matlack decides to join us...anyway....EVERYBODY JUST SHOW UP !!! ....gonna be a blast.
