In Memory

Daniel Weist

DANIEL T. WEIST, age 76, Beloved husband of Linda (nee Naughton). Dear father of Brian (Kelly), Douglas (Sally) and Thad (Polly). Loving grandfather of Ben, Danny, Thomas, Claire, Ellen, Jack, Sawyer and Patton. Dear brother of Jack (deceased), Rev. Ned, Bob (Kathy), Kathleen Readler (Dave), Mary Ann Cowden (Jim), Frank (deceased) and Jim (Laura). U.S. Army Veteran Vietnam and retired patrolman for Rocky River Police Department.

Daniel. T. Weist was born and raised in Rocky River, Ohio. He attended St. Christopher grade school and graduated from Rocky River High School in 1963. He was a Second Lieutenant in the Army and served in Vietnam all during the year 1968. He landed in the middle of the “Tet Offensive” and was in combat all of 1968. He was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts. He was awarded the Bronze Star with “V” for Valor. He saved his outfit from being over-run by the enemy. He was inducted into the Military Hall of Fame in Columbus, Ohio.

Upon returning from Vietnam, Dan became a police officer in the Rocky River Police Department. After retiring from the police, he was called to serve on the Veterans Service Commission of Cuyahoga County. He “came on board” during a time of great controversy and corruption, as the Plain Dealer reported. Dan reformed the Commission and restored it to its original purpose of serving the veterans of Cuyahoga County. He also held state-wide office coordinating all of the Veterans Commissions of the State of Ohio.

Dan was a member of the American Legion in Avon Lake and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in North Olmsted. He served as the Post Commander of the VFW, and also as its Quarter Master.

There are so many stories told by the persons he helped over the years. This is being composed by his brother, Ned, and I can hear him saying to me “OK-enough already! I did what I could and that’s all you need to say.” As his older brother, I don’t have to obey him. So the stories will continue to be told. Rest in Peace, my brother, and may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I was at Danny's Memorial Service yesterday, and it was awesome with many friends there.  His brother, Ned, did an awesome tribute to Danny and hie termed it a "Hail Mary."  Linda was so proud of their wonderful, loving marriage and teamwork.  It was nice meeting the Weist clan.  They all look alike, are close knit and nice people.   I saw so many Rocky River classmates, even from other years.  Clearly Danny was one of the good guys and loved by all.  ❤️❤️
