Yesterday I saw a dark figure at the end of our street.  He was hiding behind a tree and wore a black hoodie and carried a scythe.  My blood ran cold but I fought back.  "Not yet grim reaper, not yet", I yelled. "Keep moving along".  He left at least for awhile but we all have to come face to face with him eventually.

I have traveled a bit around the world and get asked frequently about my favorite place.  "Is it London, Paris, Rome or Marrakech"? "Nope".  "How about Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong Seoul or Tokyo"?  "Nope".  "Honolulu, San Francisco, Chicago or Key West"?  "Nope". "What about Costa Rica, Belize, St Lucia or St. Croix"?  "Nope".  Even though all those places have left fond thoughts in my mind none of them are my favorite.  The correct answer is:  Moore, Oklahoma.  That place was a paradise on earth for me for a few short years.  And even though an F-5 mile wide tornado took most of it out in the mid 1990's it will always command a fine location in my memory.  That whole adventure was set in motion when Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991, but that is a story for another day.

Hi: to my 63 classmates. I have followed without posting but  a strange  event caused me to participate. My seventh grade grandson made the bay Middle School basketball team. Their first game was at Rocky River, my first time back to the junior high since we graduated to go to high school. Seemed really strange to see all the pictures and hear the RRHS cheerleaders sing the fight song and many of the same cheers. Wierd to be cheering for Bay our arch rivals.  Hope all of you are well Chuck Baumgartner. P.S. Bay won

St. Marteen/St. Martin

That beautiful Caribbean Island  is divided into two parts.  The Dutch side is named St. Marteen and the French side is St. Martin.  Those European powers found a peaceful way to split the island which is different than a lot of the others which changed hands up to 15 times by force.

Our cruise ship docked at Phillipsburg on the Dutch side.  We told the cab driver to take us to the best beach.  He took us to the Club Orient on the French side.  We were surprized but not shocked to see that it was a nude beach.  Some of the younger folks looked good with no clothes on but most of the tourists with all their flab and wrinkles should have stayed clothed.  Suddenly a young couple looking like Adam and Eve came strolling by.  My wife snapped a nice frontal shot from ten feet.  They were completely naked and very proud.  At home I blew up that photo to a nice size and hung it in my office.

I always thought of it as a great cultural experience but when I attempted to tell the tale in my Bible study class, you could almost hear their butt cheeks tightening.  I guess that nothing has changed since the missionaries went to the Garden of Eden which is the South Seas and told the natives to put on clothes.

Caribbean Travelog Continued

St. Lucia is my favorite island and we have visited it many times.  A volcanic island in the Southern Caribbean it offers a wide variety of different scenic adventures.  St. Lucia has a live volcano, rain forests, beautiful harbors, white and black sand beaches and wonderful resorts.  It is a great place to snorkel and scuba dive.  The Pitans are two inactive volcanos that stand straight up like a couple of upside down ice cream cones.  The raw natural beauty of the island is refreshing.  Once after we docked at Castries a cousin who was related to a friend from work picked us up and gave us a complete personal tour of St. Lucia.  When we pulled away from the dock, I looked back.  I saw a beautiful 180 degree rainbow over the island and I noticed that the mountains were making their own weather with a permanent cloud cover.  This was paradise on earth.  Thank you Columbus for discovering this place for us in Western Civilization.

On Monday, February 29th, The Voice will begin to play blind auditions. Brian McKeown's granddaughter, Emily Keener has auditioned, and may have it played on Monday (not guaranteed).  She is an amazing singer, and a pretty young woman, and you can hear her if you wish at http://www.emilykeener.com/ or, hopefully, on The Voice, 8 pm on Monday.  She is 16, ands writes her own stuff!  Amazing.

Oh, John, as you know, WE know what it's like to lose someone so close-- ours a child, but yours a lifetime partner.  No matter.  It's all the same when you lose someone.  But at our age, you expect to lose parents, not your child or partner.  You are in my prayers, and there will be a blessing somewhere in the horrible sorrow.

More bad news:  Fred Thomas's cancer has returned.  I received this message from his son, William.  His daughter and two sons are there with him.  We have been friends since kindergarten, and roommates at U of M.  Let's keep him in our prayers.

"Fred is in hospice care now due to advanced cancer. He is pain free and with family. We will update you."

Fred Thomas was a good friend of mine during our years at Kensington Elementary. He was shy and reserved in class, but outside of school his antic, satiriical sense of humor came out. We sometimes joked and fooled aorund on the way home from school, since he only lived a few blocks from me. Sometimes we would tease the much older boys who lived across the street from me, to get them to chase us. Scary fun! We spent many other afternoons drawing comic books together. He did his own and I did mine. The spokesman for his dry sense of humor was Herbert, a parrot who sat most often in a cage hanging above the main action, commenting on it. When Herbert became especially disgusted he would drop turds from his cage on the hapless bozos below. There was something of Froggy the Gremlin in Herbert, and something of Fred's Message Forum political taunts. Because both our fathers belonged to the Cleveland Athletic Club, we were permitted to go on Saturdays, when few members used the club. Fred and I would catch the bus on Beachcliff and ride downtown to swim. It was a little daunting for 10 and 11-year-old boys to swim naked at the gorgeous indoor pool, but that was the CAC rule and we got used to it. The steam room might also be a bit scary. One time Cleveland Browns star kicker Lou Groza came in, completely naked, a giant towering figure who dwarfed the two skinny kids we were and barely seemed to fit. Whoa! We'd eat burgers there and go bowling, and pinboys would set up the pins. Then we'd inevitably stop at the nearby Gene'sFun House to check out the kitschy gag gifts before perusing the posters of the latest attractions at the Roxy.

Fred and I had been in email contact recently after many decades, and I had hoped we would get together perhaps later in the summer. But that was not to be. Another sign from the gods not to put anything off, especially at our age.

Goodbye, Fred. Thanks for the good times and fond memories.  It was lovely to know you..
